There are many great resources out there to help you tackle your debt / spending / budgeting goals but here a few we recommend. Remember, all of these are also businesses that are looking to make money but that doen't mean their advice isn't genuine. You can find one or a mixture of free / paid resources that can be of great help.
First off, I'm a big Dave Ramsey fan. I don't accept everything that any person ever writes but all-in-all his plan is well proven to help people struggling with their finances. You can find many resources available at his website (www.daveramsey.com) or you can start with one of his books, Total Money Makeover or more of a principled overview in Financial Peace Revisted.
One our Next Steps was to track your spending for a month and then to set a budget. Some tools below will help do both at the same time. If you want to start simply by determining what a basic budget would look like, you can use any of these worksheet tools from MoneyManagement.org, from Consumer.gov, or from Dave Ramsey.
A simple tool to control spending that we didn't have time to mention on this Sunday was using envelopes to determine how much money is availalble to spend in different categories. A quick way to find out more is on Dave Ramsey's website HERE. Other organizations also have info on using the envelope system.
Here are some more complete tools to help track spending, budgeting, and even bill pay & investing.
First off, if you want a robust desktop application that also can be accessed via app or online, you can't go wrong with Quicken.
Other app-based tools, most of which also have desktop availability through online browsers are listed below. I've listed them in order based on which ones people I know are using. I haven't reviewed all of their functionality. That's why each link takes you instead to a review of each app. Some are free and make their money through ads. Some cost money. They all have strengths and weaknesses.
We hope this list of resources helps moves you towards your goals. If you need further advice or suggestions, don't hesitate to contact our staff.
